EAR TAPING FOR PUPPIES
Ear Set in Australian Shepherds: Myths and Reality
Most owners typically desire their puppy's ears to lay "tipped" downwards. However, for many dogs, a natural "rose" ear set is inherent. It's crucial to underline: both these variants are entirely in line with the breed standard, and neither is preferable or incorrect. Nevertheless, if an owner still wishes to influence the ear set of their puppy, there are two primary methods:
-
MASSAGE. Regular gentle massaging of the ear base can assist in shaping the desired ear position. This method requires patience and consistency.
-
TAPING. There are specialized methods for taping the ears that help hold them in a specific position for a certain duration.
Ear Set in Australian Shepherds: Two Tried-and-True Methods
Number 1. Using ear or fabric glue.
(You can use Cherry Knoll Ear Fix Glue or Bison textile glue, they work the same, but the second one is much cheaper).
This method starts by applying a small amount of adhesive to the inner surface of the ear using a cotton swab. Once the adhesive is applied, the ear is then pressed against the side of the head above the eye and held in place for approximately one minute to allow the adhesive to set. To expedite the drying process, a hair dryer on a low setting can be used for about half a minute. It's essential to ensure the air is not too hot to avoid discomfort for the dog.
Number 2. Using medical tape.
This method is simpler and less messy but still effective. Begin by cutting the medical tape to the desired length. The ear should be gently folded and then secured with the tape to keep it in the desired position. The main point here is to ensure the tape adheres well and doesn't cause any skin irritation for the dog.
Both methods have stood the test of time and have proven their effectiveness. However, as with any procedure, it's always crucial to observe your dog's reaction and ensure they are comfortable. If you have any doubts or questions, it's recommended to consult with me.
